Helping Chronic Wounds Heal with Compassion and Expertise

If you’re struggling with a wound that just won’t heal, you’re not alone—and you’re not out of options. At California Vascular Health Specialists, we offer specialized wound care to help people recover from persistent, painful, or slow-healing wounds using proven, personalized approaches.

Whether you’re dealing with a diabetic ulcer, a pressure sore, or a vascular-related wound, our team is here to help restore your skin’s health and prevent complications.

How Do You Define Wound Care?

Wound care is the process of assessing, cleaning, protecting, and promoting healing in skin wounds. Not all wounds are the same—some heal quickly, while others can take weeks or months to improve. These long-lasting wounds are often referred to as chronic wounds, and they need expert care to heal properly.

Common Types of Chronic Wounds We Can Treat

  • Venous stasis ulcers – Often found near the ankles, caused by poor circulation in the veins
  • Arterial ulcers – Caused by restricted blood flow from narrowed or blocked arteries
  • Diabetic foot ulcers – Resulting from nerve damage and poor circulation in people with diabetes
  • Pressure injuries (bedsores) – Caused by prolonged pressure on certain areas of the body

These wounds can be complex and require ongoing care to avoid infection, tissue damage, or hospitalization.

What To Expect During a Wound Care Visit?

Our goal is to treat the wound and also address what’s preventing it from healing. During your visit, we’ll:

  • Examine the wound
  • We’ll check the wound’s location, size (length, width, depth), and appearance. We also look for signs of infection, like redness, warmth, swelling, or unusual odor.
  • Assess the surrounding skin
  • Healthy skin around the wound is essential for healing. We’ll look for signs of irritation, dryness, or breakdown (called periwound assessment).
  • Determine the type of tissue
  • We assess the wound bed to determine if it contains healthy tissue (granulation), dead tissue (slough or eschar), or signs of tunneling or undermining (hidden damage under the skin).
  • Clean and dress the wound
  • We gently clean the wound using sterile solutions like saline and apply appropriate dressings based on moisture level, drainage, and tissue needs.
  • Create a customized treatment plan
  • This may include debridement (removing dead tissue), compression therapy, managing infection risk, and working with other specialists when needed.

When Should You Seek Wound Care?

You should seek professional wound care if you notice any of the following:

  • A wound that hasn’t improved after 2–3 weeks
  • Signs of infection: redness, swelling, increased drainage, odor, or warmth
  • Pain that’s getting worse
  • A dark or discolored wound that doesn’t seem to be healing
  • A wound that’s draining heavily or has developed a tunnel under the skin

Our team brings extensive experience in treating wounds related to vascular disease, diabetes, and pressure injuries. We don’t just treat the surface—we look at the whole picture.
